At 12:15 p.m., we officially marked the beginning of Spring. However, the last few weeks have been anything but "spring-like" in terms of the weather. With 3 Nor-easters causing wide-spread power outages and severe damage to trees, March has certainly come in like a lion; and we have another storm system slated to hit our area later tonight and into Wednesday and Thursday.
The start of spring brings exciting changes to gardens in our area. Earthworms will start to become more noticeable, and birds will begin their spring serenades. Over the next few weeks, as the snow hopefully begins to melt and soil and air temperatures warm, more and more plants will break bud and come into bloom. Now is the time, if you haven’t started already, to think about your garden and landscape goals for this year.
With another Nor-easter expected to strike tomorrow, be sure to keep an eye on the weather for the next few weeks when planning your next moves for your garden, including directly sowing vegetable seeds, putting vegetable starts in the ground, planting or transplanting trees and shrubs, and filling your containers with annuals.
